The name of our community springs from Agar, which means a salt-pan. The original name seems to have been Agle. Many believe that we are the descendants of Sage Agasti who had two sons Agla and Mangla. Agla could well have been the first Agri man. There is another legend that we were the musicians at the court of Ravan, the demon-king of South India.
